Instructions On How to Setup the ZyXEL Prestige 642R Router

The ZyXEL Prestige 642R router can be configured in many different ways, through the Prestige Network Commander software, through the Serial cable included with the router, and through telnet.
Configure the PC to work with the Prestige 642R modem.
Windows 95-98 Instructions:
1. Click on the Start button, Settings, and click on the Control Panel.
2. In the control panel you should have an icon that says Network, double click it.
3. Look for the TCP/IP adapter on the list of components, (will appear towards the bottom of the list.) Make sure that if you have multiple TCP/IP adapters to select the one that corresponds with your Ethernet adapter. (An example is TCP/IP->3Com Ethernet 10/100)
4. Highlight the TCP/IP adapter and click on Properties.
5. The TCP/IP Properties window should come up next, click on the IP Address tab.
6. Make sure the dot is next to Obtain an IP address automatically and click on the Ok button at the bottom.
7. Click on Ok again on the Network Properties window.
8. Windows may ask you to restart, say Yes.
Windows ME Instructions:
1. Click on the Start button, Settings, and click on the Control Panel.
2. In the control panel you should have an icon that says Network, double click it. * If you do not have an icon that says Network you may have to choose View all Control Panel Options on the left hand side of the screen.
3. Look for the TCP/IP adapter on the list of components, (will appear towards the bottom of the list.) Make sure that if you have multiple TCP/IP adapters to select the one that corresponds with your Ethernet adapter. (An example is TCP/IP->3Com Ethernet 10/100)
4. Highlight the TCP/IP adapter and click on Properties.

6. Make sure the dot is next to Obtain an IP address automatically and click on the Ok button at the bottom.
7. Click on Ok again on the Network Properties window.

Windows NT Instructions:
1. Click on the Start button, Settings, and then click on the Control Panel.
2. In the control panel you should have an icon that says Network, double click it.
3. Click on the Protocols tab.
4. Highlight the TCP/IP protocol and click on the Properties button.
5. Click on the IP Address tab, make sure the dot is next to Obtain an IP Address.
6. Click on Ok.
7. Click on Ok again on the Network Properties Window.
8. Restart your PC.
Windows 2000 Instructions:
1. Click on the Start button, Settings, and then click on the Control Panel.
2. In the control panel you should have an icon that says Network and Dial Up Connections, double click it.
3. Right click on the Local Area Connection for your network. Select Properties from the menu.
4. In the Components window scroll down to TCP/IP make sure that it has a checkmark next to it. Highlight it and click on properties. Make sure the dot is next to Obtain an IP address automatically.
5. Click on Ok.
6. Click on Ok for the Local Area Connection Properties.
Restart your PC.
These instructions will describe how to setup the router using telnet:
- Click on Start, and then Run.
- In the Open: box type in telnet 192.168.1.1 click on the Ok button.
- A new screen should open with the word Password: at the top of it.
- The default password is 1234, type 1234 and press Enter.
- A Main Menu should follow.
- We are going to choose Option 3, type in 3 and press Enter.
- An Ethernet Menu should be displayed next, type in 2 and press Enter.
- DHCP by default will be set to Server. This will dynamically provide an IP address to all computers on the network. (You would only want to change this if you already have a DHCP server setup on the network.)
- Tab down to the Primary DNS Server and type in 63.65.239.28 and press Enter.
- This will take you to the Secondary DNS Server type in 137.118.1.32 and press Enter.
- Press the Tab key on the keyboard until you get to the prompt titled “Press ENTER to Confirm or ESC to Cancel:” and press the Enter key.
- This will take you back to the Ethernet Setup menu, press Esc on the keyboard to return to the Main Menu.
- Choose option 4, “4. Internet Access Setup” type a 4 and press Enter.
- For the ISP name, type in Spltrck and press Enter.
- For the Encapsulation hit the spacebar until you get to PPP.
- Multiplexing should be set to VC-based, press the spacebar until you have that selected and press Enter.
- Type in 0 for the VPI, and 100 for the VCI, press Enter each time on the keyboard to make the selection final.
- Type in the username you were given for the My Login= prompt, make sure you have @dsl after your username. Press Enter to make it final.
- Type in the password that you selected and press Enter.
- Press Tab until you get to IP Address Assignment, press the spacebar until it says Dynamic.
- Press Tab until you get to the prompt that says Press ENTER to Confirm or ESC to Cancel: and press Enter to save the changes.
- Press Esc to return to the Main Menu, and type 99 and press Enter.
- The modem is now configured, close Telnet with the X in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
- Turn the modem off and then on again with the switch on the back of the modem.
- After a few minutes a light should come on above the LAN and ADSL section on the front of the modem.
- Restart your PC and your computer should be updated with the new settings.
You should now be able to surf on the Internet! Additional documentation for advanced features on the router is located on the CDROM accompanying the router.
These instructions will describe how to setup the router using the serial cable:
- You will first want to connect the router to the network using the Ethernet cable (a crossover cable and a straight through cable are included with the router), connect the telephone cable for the ADSL service, and also connect the Serial cable from the PC to the modem.
- Once all of the cables are connected, power the router on with the on/off switch.
- To communicate with the router using a PC and serial cable you will need to setup a terminal-editing program such as Hyperterminal.
- On most versions of windows Hyperterminal is included, to see if it is installed click on Start, Programs, Accessories, Hyperterminal (on Windows 98 SE,ME,2000, you will need to go to Communications before Hyperterminal.) If you cannot locate Hyperterminal or it is not installed refer to your computer manufacturer with assistance on installing this utility.
- A Hyperterminal Window will come up next, double click the Hyperterm icon.
- Hyperterminal will ask you to type a name and choose an icon, type in DSL and click on Ok.
- A Connect to window will appear next. In the drop down box labeled Connect Using select the Communications port that you connected the serial cable to on the PC. This will most likely be COM1. Click on Ok once the port has been selected.
- Make sure that the Bits per second are set to 9600, Data bits set to 8, Parity set to None, Stop bits 1 and Flow Control set to None and click on Ok.
- Press Enter on the keyboard a few times and a Password: message should appear. The default password is 1234, type 1234 and press Enter.
- A Main Menu should follow.
- We are going to choose Option 3, type in 3 and press Enter.
- An Ethernet Menu should be displayed next, type in 2 and press Enter.

- Turn the modem off and then on again with the switch on the back of the modem.
- After a few minutes a light should come on above the LAN section on the front of the modem and the ADSL light should come on also.
