The front panel of your Nortel 1-Meg Modem has 6 status and activity indicator. The indicators provide you with modem status and diagnostic information.
3 lights should always be Solid (Light 1, Light 3 and Light 6).
1st Light : Solid GREEN - Power Light
3rd Light : Solid GREEN - Sync Light
6th Light : Solid GREEN - Network Card Signal
The other 3 lights such as the LAN light flashes stating that there is DATA flowing from and to the Ethernet Interface.
2nd Light : Flashing Orange and Red - Loop TX/RX = Modem transmitting or receiving data to/from Service Provider.
4th Light : Flashing Orange and Red - Ethernet TX/RX Status = Modem transmitting Data to computer.
5th Light : Flashing Orange and Red - Ethernet Collision = Ethernet collision detected.
Notes
If the sync light is either RED or AMBER, there is no service available.
Verify the phone cable (as supplied in the modem box) is being used.
Ensure the supplied cable is directly into the wall jack. No splitters,surge protectors, fax machines etc.
It must be plugged directly into the wall jack. Also verify the customer is using the correct wall jack.
Some people have multiple phone lines (and jacks) in their homes. You should also ask the customer to try a different wall jack.
Another thing that might affect the sync of the modem is the phone filters on all the other phone jacks in the house.
With the 1-Meg Service it is a MUST to put phone filters on all the other phones in the house or else the
modem might not sync.
What steps can I take to troubleshoot my Nortel 1-meg modem?
When experiencing a problem with the High Speed Edition service, please verify that the following items are checked.
Are all of the P.C. powered on and are all cables connected securely?
If all is OK, then proceed to the next Step.
Check to see what the Modem Indicators are displaying.
Trouble indicator details:
Modem power light is off
Be sure power switch is ON. If switch is ON, and Power light is off, be sure power cable is securely connected in back of modem,
and plugged into a functioning wall outlet.
If Power switch is ON and power cable is well connected, and the Power light is still OFF.
No data transfer ethernet link status light is off
Insure the cable between the Modem and the back of your computer is properly connected.

Insure that your Ethernet card is properly set up for use on your computer.
The ethernet tx/rx status light is off
This light will momentarily turn RED when your computer attempts to send data, and momentarily turn YELLOW when data is sent
to your computer.
The loop status light is off
Insure the Modem is properly powered ON.
The loop status light is red
The 1-Meg Modem is not receiving any signal from your service provider.
Insure that all connections are proper and your Computer Setup is correct.
Insure phone has a clear dial tone.
The loop status light is yellow
The Modem is trying to synchronize with your service provider. Insure the Modem is at least 12 inches from your monitor.
Allow the light 3 minutes to turn steady GREEN, which means they are synchronized, and data should transfer.
If Loop Status light doesn’t turn GREEN in 3 minutes, call Helpdesk
The loop tx/rx light remains off
Insure all cables are properly installed. Insure phone has a dial tone.
